Catharsis in Psychodrama revisited through a Psychoanalytic Lens
NIKOS TAKIS & ZINOVIA VASSILIADI

Abstract
Both Sigmund Freud and Jacob Levy Moreno considered the concept of catharsis extremely important. Although they both considered it as one of the major goals of the psychotherapeutic process, there were significant differences in their definitions of the term. In this article, an integration of these perspectives is attempted, through a clinical vignette.
Firstly, a brief overview of the concept of catharsis is presented from philosophical, psychodramatic and psychoanalytic perspectives. Then a psychodramatic action is described in which the protagonist revisits a traumatic incident of his early childhood. The course of the drama is processed from a psychodynamic perspective, and finally, the different levels of catharsis are elaborated in relation to the protagonist and the group.
Key words: Catharsis, Psychodrama, Psychoanalysis
