A Single Meeting with Family Members of Adults in Individual Therapy
Seymour Hoffman & Frumi Gottlieb

Abstract: Many psychotherapists treating adult individual patients never consider the option of inviting their patients’ spouses or families for a meeting in order to obtain a more objective and accurate picture of the patients’ histories, relationships and interactions with the signi cant people in their lives either because of theoretical considerations or lack of knowledge and experience in working with couples and families. is situation is very unfortunate as this can lead to faulty assumptions, diagnosis, impressions, treatment plans, waste a lot of treatment time and result in therapeutic impasses. Three brief examples are presented to support this view.

Key Words: Individual therapy, Couple/ Family therapy, Single session, Treatment impasse.
